ItalyPolitecnico di MIlanoEnergyTo analyze the circularity of resource flows in an economic-productive system based on Additive Manufacturing technology, it has been necessary to consider the entire product life cycle. Using this kind of analysis it’s possible to consider with an overview all types of circularity triggered along the different stages of the life cycle in order to assess the benefits, both in terms of environmental sustainability, and in terms of cost.
Carry on this kind of evaluation involves a detailed study of the different phases, from product creation (Beginning of Life), until the final stage of the life cycle itself (End of Life). It is a type of analysis "from cradle to cradle" of the product and, by a thorough study of the input and output resources in the different phases, they have been examined different types of circularity.

BelgiumGhent Bio-Economy ValleyChemistry and PlasticsGhent Bio-Economy Valley (GBEV) is a non-profit organisation supporting the development of sustainable biobased activities and resulting economic growth in the region of Flanders, Belgium. It therefore looks at valorisation of biomass and organic waste in Flanders. GBEV currently coordinates SuperBIO, a H2020 project that supports SMEs that want to innovate in the bio-based economy by providing value chain building and 10 different professional innovation services.

GBEV main activities include

building research and development expertise in the field of biobased products from biomass or waste through joint research programmes,
creating synergies between industrial partners, support in building new value chains, cluster formation and industrial integration,
improving the general understanding and benefits of new biobased products and bioenergy through communication with industry and the wider public, and
providing technological advice, as well as assistance with innovation projects to anyone wanting to move forward in the bioeconomy.

One of the merits of GBEV is the realisation of the biorefinery cluster at the Rodenhuize dock, representing the largest integrated production site for bio-energy in Europe. In addition, GBEV initiated the establishment of Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant in the port of Ghent through an Interreg Flanders-The Netherlands. Bio Base Europe Pilot plant is a flexible, multipurpose pilot facility offering scale up and process development services in the bio-based economy.

GBEV is strongly supporting and facilitating the use of second generation feedstock in Flanders as well as the use of waste gases for the conversion into chemicals. Using waste gases to make chemicals contributes to enlarge the circular approach. In this regard GBEV is coordinating an EU network on gas conversion and syngas fermentation within the Vanguard initiative. In addition GBEV is member of Big-C, the Bio-Innovation Growth mega-Cluster, a joint bioeconomy initiative between Flanders, the Netherlands and North Rhine-Westphalia, where it is also active in the case on C1 conversion.
